Home and Heart: Simple, Beautiful Ways to Bring Spirit, Harmony & Warmth to Every Room
Published in Hardcover by Rodale Press (March, 1998)
Author: Beverly Pagram
Average review score:

A book that truly lives up to its title.
This is one of the best home books I've ever read. And one of the handful I've read several times. Not only are the photographs beautiful, but the text truly captures what making a heartfelt home is all about. Ms. Pagram explores all the dimensions of what it takes to create a home for the spirit, drawing from many cultures. I'm so glad I found this book. She's articulated many of the things I intuitively felt a home should be, and gave me many ideas on other things to try. This is one book you really should read!

How to Sing Pop Harmony
Published in Audio CD by Musician's Workshop (02 January, 1998)
Author: Murry Owen
Average review score:

Simple but effective
When I first heard Murray Owen speak I was a little suspect, but this has turned into a great tool for someone who only knew how to sing melody and now can sing (and understand) harmony. If you're not a harmony singer, but want to learn this is the tool. If you're a fan of songs from the 60's to 70's it's real easy because you will know these tunes.

Hymnal (1940 Standard Harmony Edition/red)
Published in Hardcover by Church Publishing (June, 1985)
Average review score:

The Hymnal 1940, Standard Harmony Edition
Were you a choirboy? Did you get a copy of your hymnal or prayer book for perfect attandance at Sunday School? For two generations since the middle of World War II, the prize for many Episcopal choirboys was this book, The Hymnal 1940. Most hymnals are serious works of scholarship: laboriously constructed by a committee appointed by the church to review, revise, edit and augment its previous hymnals, they are then condemned to perpetual scrutiny and comment by its users. This hymnal was no exception; indeed, the similarly sized "Hymnal Companion," which dilated at length on each hymn, was published along with it. Now superseded by the 1982 version, it is still considered a masterpiece and superior in several respects to its successor, in particular for its legibility, certain of its texts, and its inclusion of some hymns dropped in 1982. By then the Hymnal 1940 had been augmented to over 700 hymns and 160 pieces of service music. It contains several indexes by which a hymn can be located in several different ways, including the useful "metrical index," not a feature of every hymnal. The music ranges in age from the earliest years of the Christian era right up to the 1930's; so you will find most of your favorite classical composers represented. If you have other hymnals, you should have this one. If you don't, this is about the best place to start.

In Harmony With Your Horse
Published in Paperback by Elliot Right Way Books (May, 2001)
Author: Clare Albinson
Average review score:

A Great Little Book
For such a short and inexpensive book, it was very enlightening to me and it may have unlocked the secret to understanding my horse and why he gets so spooky out on the trails when I ride alone. It explains why a horse lacks confidence in its rider/handler and tells you how you can give the horse the confidence it needs. Reading this book turned on a light bulb in my brain and I think, by following the advice in the book, I can finally have the right relationship with my horse.

In the Spirit of Business: A Guide to Creating Harmony & Fulfillment in Your Worklife
Published in Paperback by Celestial Arts (15 February, 2001)
Author: Robert Roskind
Average review score:

Fantastic Work of Truth
This book describes wonderfully how to apply the principles of Truth as illuminated in "A Course In Miracles", as well as other great works of Truth, to your career. Although the author doesn't refer to ACIM directly, the principles of Truth are constant and never changing, and this book, and ACIM illuminate the Truth.

This book gave me a deeper understanding of ACIM principles. Like Truth, it will show you the way to happiness. There doesn't need to be any conflict in your career and what you are. Doing what was meant for you to do is the challenge, and once you know the Truth of What-Is, it becomes very easy - and natural. I applaude the author for sharing his insight into this important area of our lives here on earth.

The last chapter entitled "How Does The World Work?" is one of the best pieces of spiritual writing I've ever come accross - truely inspired.

Invisible Harmony: Essays on Contemplation and Responsibility
Published in Paperback by Fortress Press (June, 1995)
Authors: Raimundo Panikkar, Harry James Cargas, and Raimon Panikkar
Average review score:

Accessible intro to a profoundly important body of work.
The lifework of Raimundo Panikkar offers a rare glimpse of an actual possible human future. Rare in the sense that "visions of the future" usually presuppose "my" group ending up on top of the heap, with other groups happily living in the places we benevolently assign them. Panikkar will have none of that. Try to envision a future that doesn't proceed from such a premise, and you'll grok the staggering scope of the problematic to which Panikkar has devoted his entire life. His written works have the disadvantage (as far as popularization is concerned) of being as challenging as they are inspiring. Holder of multiple doctorates in science, philosophy and theology, he's fully steeped in a number of religious traditions and cultures (he's a Catholic priest and also professedly a Buddhist and a secularist) and languages, and he makes references to myths and figures that many readers might not readily recognize. The essays in this book were selected to give a relatively accessible introduction to some of the ideas that are key to understanding Panikkar's work. Entering into his vision is well worth any effort it might take

Jazz Piano & Harmony : An Advanced Guide (w/CD)
Published in Paperback by John Ferrara Music Publishing (01 June, 2001)
Author: John M. Ferrara
Average review score:

No Sophomore Jinx Here! - GREAT Second Offering!
I was drawn to this after purchasing Mr. Ferrara's first book - Fundamental Guide....my daughter is currently majoring in music in college and beginning her second year. The first proved invaluable to her so the choice to purchase this book was a natural "progression" (pun intended!).

From Mr. Ferrara's Basic Improvisation Review through advanced topics such as Minor Harmony, Superimposing Models, Voicings in Fourths and Modulations (with a Blues section to boot)...the author again draws upon his very obvious strength....teaching - guiding the beginner and experienced Jazz student/player through the all too often mysterious road of learning Jazz piano.

A MAJOR PLUS is the FREE CD included with the author not only playing all included transcriptions but also adding a commentary when required. This gives the student the feeling of personal attention which should have easily doubled the price of this book.

Bottom line - highly recommended. Should be used by every Jazz teacher and serious student.
